While the trains aren’t currently running, there is much to see at the Derwent Valley Railway workshops!

This fabulous collection, based 40 minutes North West from Hobart in picturesque New Norfolk, includes eleven locomotives, nine carriages and eleven wagons.

Created by the Derwent Valley Railway Preservation Society, which was formed with the aim of operating passenger excursion trains on Tasmania’s  Derwent Valley Line, the workshop houses four steam engines, four diesel-electric locomotives, two diesel mechanical shunters and one diesel-hydraulic locomotive.

Three of the Society’s  passenger carriages were built for the “Tasman Limited” service, and are articulated in the centre, giving them a capacity of 76 people. The other two carriages are from the Emu Bay Railway Co and were used on the “West Coaster” service.

Operating times: The workshop is open on Saturdays and on request. Group visits can be accommodated.
